    Getting past Plateaus

Ive been doin BJJ for a little over a year now, and untill now have felt like I have constantly been improving. I dont feel like Im getting any worse, but I was just wondering if anyone has any advice, things they do, changing their routines, etc? in order to get past those plateaus, Ive been feeling a little stale lately.

to be honest when you plateau it is a good thing, usually what i do when i plateau is go back to the very basics of training and try to perfect those techniques, its almost like your starting all over again but your not

up your game by tring to go with more training partners who are better than yourself. Then if that doesn't work or isn't available try intentionally putting yourself in a bad position and work from there. this is what usually helps me.

Try focusing on a facet of your game. For example, if you are a strong top player but your guard needs work then work on it.

Talk to your instructor(s) and get their feedback.

Like people have mentioned, work on other aspects in your game.

My control, top and bottom is very good. Especially for a smaller guy, but my Guard passing needs work. So I focus on passing guard.

Pinpoint areas of your game that you need to improve, and work more diligently on those aspects.

Also, I found out, if your mind isnt on the game, you wont get anywhere. Understand BJJ for what it really is, an art.

Most of all, just relax when your rolling. Dont spaz, no one likes a spaz.

try focusing on escapes or specific submission defenses, i think someone mentioned this and i agree that to put yourself in a bad position and work to free yourself will teach you defense aswell as strengthen your understanding of your partners dominant position and how to properly finish from it.

I always found getting back to basics helps me.. also enter a competition or two. By putting yourself in that situation you may get a new insight into your skills. You may be one of the top dogs in your school, but your in a small pen you need to be let out and see what you can do. Also work, as others have said on the weaker areas of your game to improve them.

Thanks man, I started thinkin about why I was having problems and realized that I was playing around and experimenting a little much, and with wrong people ( ie new moves while being mounted with a high purple belt.) started workin my bread and butter again, and focus on improving my sloppy technique and Im feelin back up to par, thanks for the advice everyone!
