So I was referred here by a friend, great site by the way. I realize this is a small forum, but I'm convinced it's going to grow pretty quickly. And it's probably going to cost a pretty penny to maintain it. I'm on a few car forums as well as local forums and most of them make a deal with vendors. A Vendor pays X amount a month and he or she gets their own place to advertise on the forum. Usually the vendor will post a few times a month with updated prices or specials that they're running that month. Not only will it help with revenue but they can also participate in giving things away in the contest area.

Orlando calls theirs vendors while Tampa calls theirs shops but the idea is the same.
Another suggestion which I think would help gain members would be to add a regional section. I think this will not only encourage networking with those near us, but I also think that it'll draw members. The reason behind this is the same reason myspace got it's members. People wanted to communicate with friends, co-workers, or friends online. For example our gym is split up into 4 different locations throughout Central Florida. Sometimes we go to different locations, but we still like to know what was done at what gym, and who is improving, etc, etc.
Another thing I would recommend is a more attractive skin for the forum. While it is nice and simple it's not that attention grabbing. To me it doesn't really make a difference to be honest, but some people do care about these sorts of thing. They'll judge think the forum is boring or bland and not care about the quality of the posts. Think of how people judge books by their covers all the time. Same concept.
This isn't really suggestion, since I don't know how the user titles work here. I've noticed some people have different color belts, I don't know if this is something where the user gets it validated to represent his or her actual belt or if it has to do with posts. If it has to do with posts than I would recommend changing it. Not that matters to me, I'm a white belt. Just sayin' though.
A donate button always helps get money as well, most forums I'm on use one. No shame in that!
Maybe a blog/article section where magazines articles are reposted in english, or ask some bjj guys who blog if it would be okay to copy their blog and link them back (this would also work both ways again because you could get them to link you from their site.

on a few fourm sites that i use there are live chat boxes as you can see at myspec-v.com and kvso.net i think that would be nice to have so instead of people starting new posts on stupid stuff or asking how the best way to do a arm bar this way you can get an instant answer from fellow members.
