    Too expensive

I really love to compete (I've done 3 competitions since I started training about a year ago), but I wish they weren't so expensive. There is a Naga tournament coming up in a month by me, but it is $100. I just can't afford it. I wish they weren't so expensive. Especially if you go out there and loose your first match. Not that I plan on that happening, but it has happened to me where I paid the entrance fee for a tournament, ($65) paid for a hotel room as the place was fairly far from my house ($50) and then paid for gas ($45). I spent over $165 and was knocked out my first match. The guy I went against submitted everyone and easily took first place. It just stinks that I had to go against him first.

Are Naga tournaments typically more expensive than most? I hear they are usually pretty big and have allot of competitors, but for that kind of money I don't know that it is worth it.

I feel you bro, sucks to spend all that cash and get 1 match....The next tourny here is round robin. $40 and you get to compete against everyone in your division (up to 9 matchs.) Its also Submissions only with 1 5 min round. 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 for a lose...but you atleast get lots of rolls.

is that the one in Maple Ridge? Even if you lose 9 times... you would get your money's worth... assuming you learn something from each of those losses

you should talk to the person in charge of the tournament, whomever it may be, and offer to work and help out at the tournament in exchange for a free registration fee. maybe help out at the scoring table, or even setting up the event. i've heard of a few people who've done this. it helps if your coach knows somebody thats in charge. i know alot of the smaller tourneys would be more acceptable to this, i havent heard anybody thats doen it for an ibjjf tourney.

    worth a try.

NAGA is in my neck of the woods at the end of this month and I know many good grapplers who aren't going to it because they think its too expensive. I considered going myself, but my game plan is to take a few months off from competition and then hit some tournaments this fall. Last one I entered a couple of weeks ago only cost me $60 at the door...

I competed in divisions under 140 lb, and out of the last six tournaments I did (NAGAs, Grapplers Quest, a couple local tournies - 10 divisions total), I only had one division with more than 4 people in it. Went to a NAGA recently where they had to combine like 2-3 divisions just to get 4 competitors in gi.

I paid around 100 for each tourney (GQ was 120!), left a sizeable dent in my wallet seeing as how I owe the government a ton of money...

Kay's right though. At least for NAGA, I know that they have competitors help set up before and after the event and they get a free registration fee.

Holy shit, that is expensive! The most expensive tournament I've attended was the European Opens, that was $108. Normally in Finland tournaments go from 10-30 euros ($13-38), that 30e competition beenig the Finnish nationals and Finnish Open. Som ADCC competitions haven been 20euros ($25). Our club normally pays the competitions fees for all the guys that compete.

thats cool that your club pays the fees. We pay all our own Tournament fees at my club, although like Kay said the last 1 I worked at they actually paid me and I didnt have to pay to enter.
