    flexibility

anyone think flexibility is important for bjj?

  2. #2

it's something you're born with or you develop through constant training. it keeps your sparmates on their toes when stacking your guard. so yes, it's important. aside from technique, the physical attributes that a person should have to develop a decent BJJ game should be in this order:

    1. dynamic hips
    2. cardio
    3. grip
    4. flexibility

It all depends on your style. "Dynamic Hips" can be improved in my opinion with flexibility. Flexibility can improve many other aspects of your game as well. Is it a necessity? No, but it wont hurt and many times might help.

I believe that without it,then your BJJ game is going to be quite limited

Jiu-jitsu is complete no matter what your limitations or body type is. It's up to you to adapt your game to your abilities but improving on your hips and flexibility will only help. Same for your grip and cardio.

    it can only help right?

unless they stack you to a point where your knees are right next to your head, and you have no power in your hips, then that could be a problem.

I have to disagree with this. I have rolled with many people who aren't as flexible as myself the only thing that is has done for them is change the way they think and how they want to attack. Because they are not as flexible in certain positions they simply work to perfect the positions which they are best at.

I would have to strongly agree with this statement.

ya I gotta agree...some people are flexible in certain angels and not in others, for example when Im stickin a butterfly hook Im very flexible at being able to manipulate my legs, however if someone goes for a shoulder lock I usually tap right away as my shoulder flexibility sucks...It definetly helps your BJJ game...thats y I have started doing yoga.
