    wow... that was bad.... 6 months of training?? and he also mentioned he was older and didn't have much time to train... so what? he trains twice a week at the most?

    ... pulling out my AMEX and ordering my blue belt online as we speak.....

    Not necessarily. You can also receive stripes simply for training consistently over a certain period of time. As has been mentioned, different instructors award stripes under different criteria.

    Worry about developing the skill to deserve the belt rather than the belt itself.

    I hate when people get promoted just because they put their time in.

    Stripes are given out for whatever reason. Someone did a tournament. Someone won a tournament. Someone went to a seminar. Someone came to class for 2 months. It varies, but usually you can bet that your instructor has some method behind what you think is madness.

    but wouldnt putting time in, in a way means buying a belt?
    let say i train for 2 years to get a blue
    and i pay 100 a month, so in total i paid 2400 bux for a blue belt
