Kevin trains with him. I think he would know![]()

I don't think he meant it to sound snide. I just feel like he thinks he is funnier than he really is![]()

Hmm... Well I'm only at blue belt so far. But I found out about jiu-jitsu from UFC clips in maybe 2003. Then met a guy in the army who had done some MMA ja jiu-jitsu, trained with him abit but nothing much. Then 6 months out of the army I found a BJJ school and started training there, got 3-4 months of training in and had to move to another city where my university is located. No jj was offered at the time so I started doing MMA, they weren't very techincal and it was mainly kickboxing with some takedowns and ground and pound. This was fall of 2005, I trained twice a week the entire fall. In 2006 I didn't train at all at first, got home for afew weeks during the summer and during the 2 weeks I was home I trained almost every day jj.
The rest of the summer I was traveling so I didn't get to train any. When uni started again I decided to train MMA and kickboxing again, hard. Did that sept 06-april 07. Then my old coach contacted me and asked if I wanted to spar with one of his students who was going to the finnish nationals in a few weeks, and he was visiting my uni town. I said yes ofc and recruited some MMA friend with me. From april 2007 onward I've trained 4-6 times per week jj, july 07 I finished 4th in a small tournament (-82,3kg) in September 07 i finished 3rd in the finnish opens (-82,3kg) and won my first tournament in november 07 (-76kg and the absolute). Two days later I got my blue belt.
After that I've been struggling on, started my on gym as there was no real jj school here. I've had alot of help from my original gym, a big thanks goes to those guys
Haven't had that much success in competition after that, won my MMA debut by unm. dec. last spring, finished second in a no-gi tournament last summer. In the finnish BJJ nationals I got the first fight on a free pass, won my second match but lost the third on points, finishing with the 8 best, this was in the absolute division. I lost my only match in -76kg, he won by two advantages if I don't remeber incorrect. It was a close fightAfter that I've won one BJJ match and lost two.
Been suffering from a bad should injury over a year now![]()

Couple years
10 months of solid training, I only did one competition in that time and did horribly, My weight was up and I was competing at 220+ division, Its down now and I compete at a lesser weight, But it was 10 months of solid training, at least 5 times a week and some days I was training twice a day.......
I got mine in September of last year. The total time was three years because due to injuries, I had to do two things. First I tried to do three a weelk but was always needing to recover from nagging injuries.
Then I learned an important thing. I needed to not REST. Instead I needed to work out and do conditioning workouts every day I wasnt in the academy. Once I did, then I was able to keep going and my injuries went away.
Once that happened, I really started to make progress. But the key really was to augment my normal lessons with an occasional private to both identify my weak points and correct them and learn how to refine my attacks. I cant recommend both these things enough. If you havent taken a couple privates you are cheating yourself of dramatic improvement.
When i started my goal was simply to get a blue belt. IF I could get beyond three months. Im way over 40 when I started. Now that I have and I have refined my whole program to include ongoing conditioning, my new goal is to get the purple.
I have only done one tournament but since I improved my game Im dreaming about going to the Brazilian Nationals this year or next.
