it took me a year and a half to get my blue belt. i trained 4 times a week. and loved every moment of it. after that i spent close to 3-4 years until i got my purple belt. i started competing at that point and realized competition just wasn't my idea of a good time. i enjoy rolling for the because i enjoy rolling. (i will always hit the mats with someone when asked to. unless it is in the middle of teaching a class). from purple it was just a short 4 years till my brown belt. i had joined the army at this point and my instructor found me various instructors at various bases across the country to train and test at. 4 years ago i received my black belt with professor stripes. 5 months ago i got my 2nd degree. i can only say it has been the greatest journey i hope to never finish. one day i will be able to tie a belt onto my own children. and hopefully see them tie one on to their children.
I took up BJJ at age 53 after enrolling my grandson in a local academy. I was awarded my Blue Belt after 14 months (spent about 6 weeks down with various injuries) and have competed in four tournaments including NAGA/IBJJF sponsored events. My next goal is to stay healthy, help out at my academy and hopefully get my purple while I am young enough to enjoy it.
I got my blue at the 22 month mark on training one day a week. But my actual mat thime was 16 months but to a 6 month lay off due to major dental work. My coach held my test of from Feburary to May of this year because he wanted to see me compete since I hadn't been able to while training under him.

I got mine in 6 months, but thats because I had a brown belt in Judo and did A LOT of ground...had a lot of no-gi experience too.
i want a blue when i compete at a podium
Got mine tonight after 15 months of hard training. I was totally surprised and not sure if I'm totally ready for it yet but some higher ranking teammates told me its well deserved and I've earned it and I trust my instructors judgement 100%. It's both a proud and intimadating accomplishment.
don't worry about the belt just keep training and get better
