My blue took 2,5 years, training 3 x week and several injuries.
    It's all in the hips

How many mat hours on average before receiving blue? Also when would it be time to receive your blue, should you be submitting guys your own level or do they expect you to submit the blue's or just hold your own with the blue's?

    Any thoughts?

I think for the most part to be a blue, you have to be able to compete with blues. as far as mat time goes...It really depends on the the club, at my club a Blue usually takes around 2 years, some clubs its 9 months...as well previous experience, and how often/much you roll also plays a part.

I started Jiu Jitsu in May 2004 and was promoted to Blue in August of the same year. I had a solid wrestling background and did some no-gi before training Jiu Jitsu. After putting on the gi I never took it off. I've been blessed that no major injuries have kept me off the mat for more than 3-4 weeks and that has only happened once. Since starting Jiu Jitsu I've finished my Bachelor's and Master's Degree w/o taking time off. I think every promotion happens when its supossed to.

not to sound like an a-hole, but I don't get the sweating over how long and how. I just started in the game, and honestly promotion is the furthest thing on my mind. Why not just focus on learning the game as well as refining yours, work hard and keep moving forward and positively, and when it comes it comes.

everyone's different, so naturally how fast one gets any promotion will differ form one person to another

You don't sound like an a-hole at all. Focusing on improvement will definently help you improve faster, but there is no harm in finding out how fast everyone else has progressed. It is interesting to see how long it takes people to progress between belts and it also helps to remind people that it takes a long time and a lot of hard work.

Also, one of the top things people want in a job is recognition. Recognition (at work) can be in the form of a simple "good job", a pay raise or promotion. This thread is really a thread for people to state their achievements and for people to congratulate them on the promotion and all of their hard work. I dont honestly think there is anything wrong with that.

I think thats a great attitude to have man...Keep it with you and you will do well.

The majority of people just like being recognized for their work is all, but really the promotions dont mean much...As long as your are improveing, and learning...thats whats important.

In ten minutes, I have been a blue belt for 4 hours. I started in the kids class at 11, so i had to wait to make the age requirement. I hit that in march so I turned up my game and it took just over 5 years, but I know about as much as the purple belts at my school.
