Just curious how many of your guys' schools put a lot of importance on jiu jitsu self defense techniques and for those that do put a lot of time into self defense what system do you train under ? I myself train Behring jiu jitsu and master flavio Behring loves for us to train a lot of self defense...
I am also under master Flavio Behring, so I see a lot of the self defense too. We just finished a 3 day seminar with him and I am always surprised to see how he handles the self defense techniques in the seminar. This was the third seminar of his I have gone to, and he always does self defense. It is always cool to see when he takes the self defense you just learned and applies it to the ground. It gives you an idea how BJJ evolved.
Also, I helped with the kids part of seminar and they did a lot of self defense. It was interesting because in the grappling tournament after the seminar, one of the kids actually used the guillotine escape that master Flavio Behring showed them earlier that day. It wasn't the normal escape that we teach during regular classes, so I know that he had just learned it.
A lot of people criticize the self defense aspect of bjj because they think it isn't applicable to modern day grappling (or fighting). The kid actually using it with success in a tournament kinda changed my perspective a little on the self defense aspect in bjj.
That's cool,, I've also been to three of his seminars. He just visited our school January 23-25 and of course the techniques he teaches are so simple and effective and I usually stand there asking myself "why didn't I think of that" ..
I think we're very lucky to train in the system and have him visit each school and learn directly from a man who has years of knowledge in Bjj ..
Personally I HATE the self defense aspect of BJJ that most schools teach. My instructor always spends December teaching it (as there is less attendance) to make sure the guys know it. My self defense is cardio, if I end up in a situation I know for a fact Im gonna be able to out run anyone. I think there are a lot better self defense systems and martial arts out there, and if I had any interest in self defense I would consider them...but as it is I love jiu jitsu, and I love the sport aspect of it.
Hahaha , yeah running always works ...I agree , there are tons of great self defense systems. One system they teach at our school is kajukenbo..
We don't really work on a self defense system per say. We learn thai box and judo throws. a lot of what we learn translates over.
Before I started BJJ I did Japanese Jujutsu and alot of that was Judo, joint locks, some ground work and than self defense techniques using all of those aspects. We learned to defend against alot of stuff including weapons. Loved learning the self defense stuff and it would definitely help but I really started liking the ground aspect of JJJ and ended up finding a BJJ school so I dont go to the Japanese school anymore. I wish we did some self defense stuff at my school now but we dont. We have boxing, judo, and MMA so they would help in real life situations. I think bjj would help in a lot of situations, obviously you wouldnt wanna take someone to the ground but if it ended up there a bjj guy would easily defend a real threat. Now weapons and stuff obviously you dont wanna be in those situations and they should be avoided at all costs but that kind of self defense was cool to learn. I wouldnt mess around with someone with a knife or bat but in a life or death situation its good to know how to defend them and stay alive long enough to run or disarm the threat.
Love thai box. A buddy and me were sparring one day, we got a little competitive with our kicks. Well needless to say the next day at work we were comparing our bruises on our legs. It's the perfect balance to jiu jitsu. One is flowing, the other is pure brutality. Both are beautiful when applied right.
