    Wrestling and BJJ

Any of you guys train wrestling and BJJ, we started a wrestling class at our school and today was my first day. I have much more experience on the ground and I am okay on my feet but this class was grueling. We did a lot of single leg finish drills and techniques. I would really like to develop a solid take down game to compliment the ground.

We have a wrestling class at our school and I like it. Double legs are always fun but as far as takedowns we mainly train judo during our Bjj class ..

Yeah takedowns can be brutal, but they also require alot of energy and strength. Just make sure you up your cardio if you want to be effective.

Yeah I agree ,, wrestlers have great cardio and use a ton of strength..one of the guys at our gym is a wrestler and new to Bjj and he uses all his strength to try and pull your head off in a headlock..lol

Cardio and strength are without a doubt assets. We were doing a drill where one guy has a hold of a single leg and the other guy has a whizzer and you alternate legs every thirty seconds for three minutes. I felt like my lungs were on fire and my muscles were filled with lactic acid. I notice the thing about wrestling is that it can be extremely technical but you still need more cardio and strength than ground grappling. It's not that I haven't trained standup grappling before but I have never trained it specifically it was always in the context of a BJJ class or an MMA class.

We don't have a wrestling specific class at my gym but it is incorporated with our bjj. I only helps those who have never wrestled before. I wrestled back in the day in high school and feel it give me an adavantage to some degree on the guys I train with since they are just learning some of the stuff I've known for years.

Hahaha, dude I feel ya on that . It really annoys the crap out of me until he leaves an arm behind in my guard or sometimes one arm and his neck.. I actually had a clean solid arm bar locked in tight on him and the dummy would not tap so I let it go and he turned to me and says "what, why did you let go ?" guess I should've broke it

We used to have a separate wresting class at the school I attend. Now we incorporate takedowns in our class, at the beginning. Some days its more Judo and some days more Wrestling. I like it better this way because the classes are a big longer now. A solid stand up game is crucial for tournaments. It is always good to offensive takedowns and defensive takedowns, or a great guard pull technique lol

I started Jiu-Jitsu way before wrestling, but once I started wrestling I realized the two go hand in hand. My BJJ background really helped with my balance in wrestling and the wrestling helped build up my endurance. It is also nice to be able to hold my own against any wrestlers who come in and think they're all that.
