    Mind games

Does anyone find that playing strategy games really helps with their bjj? I try to play as fast as I can looking ahead as much. The other night when I was rolling, I tried to to do the same thing and for a minute things just flowed.

If you do, what games do you play? I hate to say it but I play simple birds on a wire, kinda like snood if anyone remembers that far back.

One of the signs of you starting to understand the art is that you can think ahead. As for mind games, I find that it makes your opponent tire out faster if you keep a relaxed look on your face. It makes them want to try harder and they waste energy.

That's funny man,, I always keep a straight face and get the exact reactions you say of your opponent beginning to try harder to pull a submission off until they tire out..

straight face is good. Another thing you can do is control your breathing. When your opponent is working hard, there is nothing more demoralizing then to see you straight faced and not audibly breathing.

Definitely this. Not doing yourself any favors by letting them know your tired.

I try to be strait faced too but have slipped on occasion. I had a guy try to wrist lock me from in my closed guard in my first blue belt fight and I laughed at him (not maliciously, just I found it really funny at the time) and he got a bit rattled, Went wide eyed and and dropped the attack on my wrist.

When I roll, I do try to push one way, then go the other way. But I am still trying to learn to keep a straight face. Usually I am having so much fun that I end up smiling.
