Hi I was wondering what everyone's thoughts on people ranked lower than black belt giving promotions?
I've seen a similar question asked elsewhere and was surprised how many people disagreed with it completely.
When I started BJJ the closest black belt was a 3 hour drive away, There was 3 BJJ clubs in my city all run by purple belts so there was never any option of training with a Black belt. My instructor has permission from his to promote up to blue and I don't see anything wrong with that. I've competed with blues graded by black belts and they aren't amazingly better then me or any of the blues from our club.
One of our rival clubs instructors have been promoted very speedy up to black (this person kept changing affiliation and each time he changed allegiance got a new belt...) but I've noticed from competitions etc that there standards are still lower then ours e,g to date none of there guys have ever beaten any from our club in competition but they seem to get graded a good 6 months - 1 year before us .
Really a BB might have the skills but they can still be crap at teaching, Our instructor is still purple but he's a brilliant teacher.
I don't mind it honestly. I would have a problem if say a purple belt promoted to blue just because they really dont have the judgement yet. I think stripes would be ok for purple belts and brown would be fine up to purple like they can already. Brown is close enough to black that they should know when someone is ready for a promotion.
