I grappled for 4 years in the Marine Corps, studied BJJ in Okinawa for a couple of months before taking a long time off and just started up again a month and a half ago. I been training 3 days a week since. Wednesday night the lead instrutor told me I looked mean while I rolled with another white belt, tonight I got my first stripe. After being promoted I rolled against another student getting his first stripe a 3 stripe white belt, 2 blue belts and then the second degree black belt. Its one of the proudest moments, thanks for letting me share it with you.
just my two cents. all that crap from the military, forget about it. that is all strength and no technique. it will serve you better to pretend you are a 130 pound dude with no power and learn from there.
While I agree that 98% of what they caught us in the Marine as a fight system was awful and would get you killed, grappling with BJJ black belts, high school and college champion wrestlers and the guys that spent all day in the gym taught me a lot of stuff that I use in my BJJ today.
