I know stripes are based on personal development and all that, but about how soon should I be expecting to get stripes on my blue belt? I've been blue for about 4 months. One of my friends has had his for about 8 months and is really good in my opinion but hasn't been given any sign of being promoted.

There's no easy answer since the awarding of stripes varies dramatically by school. Some schools don't give out stripes at all and the ones that do often award them haphazardly. The only way to get a decent answer is to either talk to your training partners or ask your instructor directly. Or better yet -- don't worry about it and just train your ass off.
Just train hard, and be loyal to your gym and coach.
stripes seem so subjective. If there is a clear pattern, I haven't observed it yet.

What Ive always found with stripes is the more people worry about them, the harder they are to come by. The less you think about it, the easier it is to get em. Ive never put to much thought into my promos, really just in improving (remember the stripes/belts are simply a reflection of what your instructor sees, during the limited time he can watch you.) But I always got my promos quickly (for my club atleast) because I never really put to much thought into the promos themselves, but more so into improveing my skills. that being said its good to have goals (IE blue belt, purple, whatever.) but the real goal at the end is to have good smooth jits, regardless of rank. IMO
Agree with the above. Stripes start to have less significance over time. When you first start and are white and blue you focus alot on them becasue you view it as a sign of your progression, but in the end I'd rather wear a white belt w/ black belt skills than have a black belt with white belt skills. Focus on the technique as it is the most significant aspect of this art and why we train to begin with. I know some schools that give no stripes and others that give them with time, not necessarily skill. Don't worry...the skill will come with time, patience and practice.

I'd say it might be a natural progression. Have you gotten better? Are you able to be more fluid when you roll? Are you better in your basics?
Yeah. My spider guard is WAY better than it used to be and I'm using more advanced submissions.

Maybe your instructor is noticing too. Maybe in his mind he believes you have earned this
