One key to an effective butterfly guard is to be sitting up or posting on your hand because to pass you need control the hips, flatten the back, reach under and grab the foot to remove the hook and you usually end up in half guard. At my school a lot of guys play butterfly guard and a few are really exceptionally good from the position. I on the other hand am not very good at it yet so I tend to only experiment with it when I roll with white belts. I have also seen a few different submissions from butterfly one being a spinal lock.
The best thing to do is always just ask your instructor if you need more information. DVDs are great, but you can't get help from a DVD if youre having problems.

I also like butterfly guard I used to be terrible at it and than it suddenly clicked. I didn't do anything different except learn to pass it effectively and I believe that may have helped me get better at it because I knew what the other guy needed to do to pass.
