    Butteryfly Guard

I have been experimenting with the butterfly guard and I think I am going to dedicate a month or so to working specifically on it. I am looking for a DVD that covers the butterfly guard as a position rather then individual moves. If anyone has seen Stephen Kesting's Dynamic Half Guard, then you know what I mean. In his DVD, he goes over not only moves, but the position and what you need to know about the position from A to (almost) Z. Does anyone know of any DVD's or have somewhere for me to start looking?

Haha again Stephan comes up! Hes a very technical guy, and awesome instructor...Ive had the chance to train with a number of times, as hes very good friends with my instructor. I would look into Marcelo Garcias book, theres about 50,000 butterfly variations in it.

I am assuming you are talking about his "X-Guard" book and not the "Advanced BJJ Techniques" book. I am going to have to stop by the bookstore and check it out. I would love to take a trip to train at somewhere that had people like Stephen Kesting. I have to agree with you on the guy (from what I have seen of his videos)

I have not seen Stephan's DVDs, I will have to give them a try. I do however have the X-Guard book and all of Marcelo's DVDs and can highly recommend them. MGinaction is another outstanding resource.

I haven't had a chance to check out Marcelo's book yet. I was going to buy that book a while ago, but I got Saulo's book instead. MGinAction is great but I think $25/month is too much. Phenominal site, but I am still a white belt and there is no way I need (or could make use of) all that information. I did find a DVD by Stephan Kesting and it was great for anyone who wants to start learning the butterfly or x guard. Here is a link to the site/movie:

Great step by step instruction and great fundamentals for the butterfly and the x guard in the DVD. Victor, you should check some of his DVDs out.

Stephans good...He explains things really well, and is very eperienced guy. He does seminars in Vancouver every couple months, and will guest instruct at a # of diffrent schools, includeing mine. Marcelos X-Guard book is wicked, lots of useful stuff in it.

There's a Michael Jen DVD on the topic of butterfly guard too, which seemed pretty decent from the bits I've seen. Fairly old though, so I'm not sure if it is still widely available. Most of his DVDs are called 'ultimate' something, so presumably it was called 'Ultimate Butterfly Guard'.

i like butterfly guard but its not my go to guard like my closed... i found out that before you learn any sweeps or submissions from any guard you have to know how to control your partner for example i used to get my closed guard broken (still do) but what i do is i learn to control my opponent sleaves and posture with drills practice controlling someone in your certain guard before learning any sweeps/attacks do this for about a month but make sure you are learning the proper control for each guard trust me this really helps

do yall's dojos not go over the butterfly? it is one of the most effective when it comes to sweeps. get a guy that has a good butterfly and try and pass his guard. your going to get swept. dont think of the butterfly as i have it so i have to keep it. all you have to go is pull full guard if you dont feel good about it. spend a few months finding that sweet spot, and you will be able to sweep very easily.

no i meant that when you learn any type of guard you gotta learn how to maintain it such as closed guard you keep your opponent from getting good posture with grips and yes we do go over all sorts of guards but i favor closed guard the most but i see what you mean
