I need some advice. Any help is appreciated.

Alright, well I'm as educated in jiu jitsu as any casual mma fan would be, but lately it's starting to become an obcession of mine. So, I really want to start traing. With my competitive nature and growing interest/love for jiu jitsu I want to go as far as I possibly can in the sport. So my dilemma is that I'm not exactly financially secure and so I can either train at this local school ran by Tony Damigo or I can take the 40 minute drive to bakersfield and train at Bakersfield BJJ ran by Matt Baker, but I can only afford the gas to go to bakersfield once a week, but with the local school I can just walk down the street. My problem is I'm not sure which is better for me in the long run training less but at a better school or training often at a lesser school. ANY informative input will be appreciated. Thanks.

At this point being a beginer I would say more is better.. once a week is not going to give you the amount of practice you need.. I speak from expereince there..
If you are in the Scranton Area of PA and are having trouble finding instruction or training partners or simply can not afford the training that is provided in Scranton.. Contact me. I am starting a BJJ club under the direction of a Jorge Gurgel Black Belt.

agreed man, training at a better school once a week isnt gonna help you to much to honest. To see real improvement in your game, I would say you need ATLEAST 3 days a week on that mats. ATLEAST 3 days. I always tell guys 1 day a week will help you maintain your game, but its hard to improve with so little mat time.

Thanks a lot guys. I think I'm gonna try Timarus idea, just have to find out what it will cost to train at both.

When you are a beginner you dont really need to be instructed by a black belt or need to train with Marcello Garcia. I have been instructed by blues, purples and a brown belt and I can say that the information was all the same when I first started. When you get more advanced, then getting advice from higher belts and more experienced people will help because you wont be asking only basic questions. An example is asking the instructor, "How do I do an armbar from guard?" Any blue belt (or 2 stripe white belt ) should be able to answer that question.

I learned the basics from a blue belt for the first few months in my bjj training and I dont really think I would change anything about how I started bjj. Don, Tim and Avenged all have the right idea. I would train at the closer gym for a few months, then I would branch out to the other gym after some time. You might find the gym closer to you to be more then adequate for quite a while.

Yeah, exactly what the guys said already. More is better. Once a week won't help your game out very much, ofcourse early on you will reach a certain level but after that your learning curv will stagnate.

I started under a purple belt and blue belt, they held the classes 50/50. I trained really only 3 months under them and then moved to another town that had MMA, but no jiu-jitsu. The guys teaching were white belt level, but still I learned things from them. Mostly I ofcourse learned by sparring, as I knew some basics and started to evolve around them. Ofcourse it was hard as there was no one you could really ask for advice or to hold training sessions more than twice a week.

Anyways, I started jiu-jitsu in 2005 and we got proper jiu-jitsu classes rolling in may 2007. In january 2010 I got my purple belt. Ofcourse I had to attend a lot of seminars and visit my original gym a lot to get new things into my game and to just ask and get some basic advice. But the point was, that it's possible to advance at a decent pace even if you started training under white belts.

    Good luck and keep training
