What is Whey Protein
Whey protein is actually a term used to describe a group of globular proteins that can be separated from whey. When cow’s milk is used to manufacture cheese, it also leads to the production of whey, which may or may not be discarded. It is a mixture of lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin and serum albumin.
Similar to protein found in egg white, whey protein can also be irreversibly changed by heat. When made part of the pasteurization process, it becomes less bio-active. If not, whey protein naturally becomes bio-active which basically means it contains a high concentration of cysteine and consequently glutathione, an antioxidant that is essential to improved fitness and health
.
Bio-active whey protein is an active source for protein but exposure to extreme heat can easily reduce the amount of cysteine in it without affecting its protein content and basic food value.

What Makes It Good for the Body
Because whey protein contains an inordinate amount of essential and non-essential acids, it frequently plays a prominent role in most low-carb and high-protein diets. Another reason for this is because of its low content of fats and of course, carbohydrates.
maddy26,
The many different proteins on the market today is amazing. Going into any big name nutrition store and looking through the many rows of choices makes me wonder the bang for the buck. There are some good sales from time to time, for example I got 4 months worth of glutamine for 19 bucks, I was all over that, but as for protein I really do not see the advantage over the whey protein sold at walmart at a much better price. What do you think?
Vic
Well, i am a huge fan of syntha-6 Protein for the main fact that it has a good taste to it in my mind. That has been the one thing that has driven me in certain directions when it comes to protein and other pre/post workout drinks. I get it for $40 once a month. Not a bad price in my mind.
I know what you mean about taste. I have tried most flavors see which is easier to choke down and have settled on vanilla. At home I mix it with skim milk which helps with the flavor. At work its just water and a peice of ice to help break it up in the shaker and down it goes as fast as possible.

Wow at that trueprotein site. That is WAY too much controll over my supplements for my taste, but still cool that a company does that.
According to the National Dairy Counsil, "Whey protein is the best type of protein, as it contains all the amino acids necessary for muscle protein synthesis."
Though this thread have been here for quite a while, I still would like to insert my opinion.
Whey protein is quite helpful for those who are conscious with their body. There are numerous benefits you can get from it. However, it will be wise to observe proper intake of whey protein as well as stable body building programs for excellent result. Excessive intake of protein can lead to kidney and liver malfunction. We don't want our effort to be useless, therefore consuming beyond professional prescription should be avoided.
