    Gi or No Gi?

I went to a tournament this last weekend and signed up for Gi and No Gi. There were a lot of people there for the No Gi section, but there was hardly anyone there for the Gi section. I always thought that most people trained with a Gi but now I think it is completely opposite. I asked the owner of the gym I goto and he said that there are many more no gi people then gi grappelers. Is this the way it is everywhere?

Still a majority Gi in my area but the balance is shifting more and more to Gi. A shame I love collar chokes so much.

Most of the comps i enter are probably 70/30 no gi. And the guys that enter the Gi sections are very, very well drilled. Having said that last time i was in the Gi division i got second thanks to 3 defaults! No gi seems to be the preferred competition right now. I think it will swing back the Gis way tho when people discover that they need to tighten up their games

I havent competed yet or anything, but at my school we do gi and no gi, and i prefer gi way over no gi, i love to use the gi to my advantage, and sometimes in no gi, i find myself lost, but i'm still really new, only been doing it for like 2 or 3 months, so i suppose I could change my mind later. Probably not, especially since i just shelled out 150 for a new koral light gi, which i rolled in tonight and it was amazing btw.

Where I live the diffrence is there are a lot of "MMA" schools. These school teach "Jiu-Jitsu" but its all no-gi. Which means in a no-gi division there can be a ton of MMA guys that dont compete or roll much in a gi. Although at the last tournament here there was probably 2-1 ratio of people IN the gi...my division had 5 in gi, and no one no-gi lol.

Yeah I was going to say the same as Avenged...There are a ton more "MMA" schools around than actual BJJ schools and all they do is no-gi and even give belt promotions based on no-gi grappling, which is ridiculous in my opinion.

I agree and if you look at records of most top grapplers almost all of them train both Gi and No Gi.Gi is much more technical and teaches you proper escapes and movements instead of always just power pulling and using sweat to get outta stuff.Im no pro and just had my first comp sat,but i can def tell after doin both divisions that No Gi is much easier. We don't even train in No Gi in my gym and i had no probs doin No Gi(though i did get warned for holding the shorts hehe)and a bunch of our guys took 1st also in No Gi.

It's the same here in Finland! Last weekend I attended a tournament where there was 185 guys fighting in the ADCC part, 120 guys were supposed to fight with the gi, but like 80-90 showed up in the end... Personally I fight gi much rather than no-gi.

I prefer gi, and so do most people in the northwest. but it could technically be considered no gi because there are only about 6 of us that actually use the gi to our advantage.

The Gi also benefits your No-gi game, not the other way around.
