    Training at 2 different Schools

A buddy of mine started off at one school years ago, and sort of trained on and off with the same instructor. 6 months ago he joined another school on the side (b/c he moved and it was closer to home for him) and he actually continued under his original instructor (yah he was paying for 2 memberships... crazy guy). I joined the 2nd school with him and did dropins at his 1st school on the side as well... i however got my original training at a different local school... but this story is about him not me...

Anyways, he went from 1 to 3 white belt strips about 6 months ago.... this was from his first instructor. The funny thing is, he went to class at the 2nd school one day with 1 stripe, then the next day he had 3 stripes. I don't think anyone really noticed b/c he was still new at the 2nd school. Anyways, months pass, and he gets a his blue belt from his original instructor (im pretty sure he's been training on and off for 4 years under this guy), while still training at the 2nd school. He still shows up to the 2nd school with his white belt. (btw at the 2nd school where he is a 'white belt' i've seen him dominate alot of the whites and tap out some bluebelts). I told him it would be funny if he got promoted to blue belt by the 2nd school too... (which is a posibility)

Anyways what do people think of the situation? Should he be going to both schools with a blue belt? even though the 2nd school is unaware of him training at his 1st school too?

our city is somewhat small so all the blackbelts around here know eachother or have trained with eachother in the past. I'm sure alot of guys train at 2 or more schools, but have 1 instructor as their main.

I am a person who values honesty. I would have started at the second school then informed both of the instructors that I was dual training. This would have kept him from any problems. I would only let one of the instructors give me a promotion though. By not telling the both of the schools of attending them at the same time, a situation is created where the instructor's judgements are (or could be) directly compared. This could lead to a problem in the future, especially if they find out.

Most of the upper belts (purple and brown) that attend our school goto other places in other states to train and get promoted because we dont have a black belt at our academy. Everyone knows they train at other places and there is no problem because they were honest and upfront about it. I dont think your friend is meaning to cause problems, but that doesn't mean that there couldn't be one. I am sure that if he went to the schools and pulled the instructor aside to explain the situation, they wouldn't care in the least.

Last thing I have to say is that I am a fan of going different places to get different training and as many training partners as possible.

First off I need to know which 2 schools Dennis? haha, man Thats a crazy situation...I think he should have been upfront at the 2nd academy about his training, because if hes planning on remaining under the guidance of his first instructor then he should respect that promotion and wear his blue belt proudly.

yah i told him to stick with his orig instructor for his promotions,etc.... and use everywhere else for learning and what not.... that being said, he's moving again, so i'm sure he's gonna go back to his original place b/c it will be much closer to his new place.

jason, i don't really want to say what schools/place etc, just in case someone comes across this thread thats local, but i can say that it's not westcoastbjj

Yah open roll would be cool, my friends school sorta do that, but I think it's like friends of one of the purple belts that's hosts it, gb guys, megaton, nvbjj, 10th planet, etc.. I went once a long time ago.

I think it would be best to be upfront and honest, with both instructors as a matter of respect and integrity.

He should tell the instructors. He should talk to the especially about his blue belt to the second instructor. If he is rolling with white belts, he might go to hard because he is used to going with blue belts at the other club. He should tell them especially since he is tapping all the white belts and some blue belts. With that the instructor might put him up against better grapplers.
