I think for a lot of clubs its about loyalty. No offence meant when it comes down to it stripes dont mean shit. A belt is not only a reflection of you but of your instructor as well. It also links you to that person, because no matter what happens after you received that belt under them, you trained under their influence. With all the club hopeing you've done they might be a little hesitant to attach their name to you, as there not sure your gonna be there next time around. I say pick one and stay there bro, if its only another couple months well hey, its already been 3 years.
There was this really really talented 4 stripe blue from our club, you had 4 stripes on his belt for almost 8 months. Anyways he got frustrated and tired of waiting and ended up leaveing our club and starting his own. He another guy had been training together and received there blus about the same time, anyways Keith (the other guy) got his purple 2 weeks after Joe left...Joe was only 2 weeks away from his purple when he left! So now he has to train under someone else. Anyways hes still a 4 stripe blue (this is 9 months later!) Because Im sure the other club is testing his loyalty. Is he purple belt level? Ofcoarse, hes a super talented grappler, but sometimes talent isnt everything. IMO
ya it was something like that, several diffrent schools infact, on and off training for nearly 3 years I think?
we'll im sort of in the same boat, i trained 2 years at one place got my bluebelt, went and trained somewhere else for 6 months, no promos or anything (not that i expected it), currently doing a month at another place that i sorta been doing drop-ins at since my good friend trains there. For me i just want to learn as much as i can from whomever, since the time for me to get from blue --> purple is gonna take a long time no matter where i train, i figure i'm gonna take the next year to just test drive all the local schools until i make a commitment as to where i want to be a permanent at. The past month i think i went to 4 different 'teams' just to train and have fun.... promotion is the last thing on my mind. I figure i will settle at one place when its time for me to work on my purple belt.
But to get back to topic, i think an instructor wants to see that u put in time and show a level of commitment/loyalty before they promote you, as essentially they are putting their 'mark' on you. Whenever i train somewhere new, the first thing that gets asked of me is 'where did u train?, who gave you your blue belt?' ..... instructors don't want to promote someone, the student leaves and goes elsewhere. Like it or not, your belt lineage reflects the reputation of the black belts who promoted you.
another thing i was thinking, how long did it take these guys to get their blue belts? purple? etc.... if say your instructor took 5 years to get a blue belt (which was a huge deal back in the day), do you think they want to promote you to blue belt in 1 year? idk, just a thought. Old school instructors probably had it waaay harder then we do now as relatively new bjj practitioners.
im sort of in that boat. i started training in my town and love my gym. but when i leave for school i have to train somehere else. i could careless though about promotions at my secodary school. jusrt want to learn and when schools over all my dedication is to my main gym. and also my goal is to get into mma and ur belt doesnt matter in mma as long as you win lol
I do not know if I have a way of retrieving it.. I will see what I can do.. but the guy was basically complaining that he was not getting promoted but he bounced around so much it was no wonder.. if I recall
