Hi Guys,
I'm scheduled to get a full sleeve tattoo in the next few weeks and wondered if any of you guys have been inked and how long you stayed off the mat after this. I have been advised to stay off the mat for at least 3 weeks (especially using Gi's). Looks like it's going to be Abu Dhabi for me all the way for the next few months.
I have a few tattoos, I never took more than 2-3 days off. What I did tho, was bout really gentle antibacterial soap and good lubridreme
before I roll I washed it good, then applied lubridreme followed by ceran (seran?) type wrap over the tattoo, to minimize rubbing...then afterwards did the same thing again...all my color is still fine, didnt have infections or scabbing.
Take a few days off at least and see how your tat is healing. Avenged gave some good tips. I would not risk a full sleeve, that is a lot of work and a lot of money. Me and another person from my gym got tats on the same day and we went back to train a few days later. His got jacked! It was on his forearm and looked like it ripped in the middle (they are open wounds until they scab over and heal). That delayed him coming back and then he had to go back and get it fixed but you can see the damage. If you can’t stay off the mat just do the technique but one person going for an armdrag, even from the knees and you could be in some trouble.
I have to go out of town Thursday and Friday. So.... I have appointment on Wednesday for some work to take advantage of my time away to get some ink.
Thanks for the geat advice guys. Its a lot of money and I don't want to jack it up. I might take a few weeks off and see how it goes.
I got a tat a few years back the first time i took up BJJ.The tat guy said i would be fine after about 3 days if i lubed it up and wraped seran wrap around it.Well i took his advice and guess what??All the fn color was ripped out of it while i rolled, well not all of it but it blotched the hell outta it.So i had to wait 2 weeks to get it fixed, then another 3 weeks for it to heal completely. It may have worked for some, but if your spending alot of money on it i would advise a good 3 week layoff so as not to have your art destroyed.
Stupid question, but you will have to humour me on this. The inital outline is for the 3 week layoff? The rest of the tattoo should be sweet I assume. Otherwise I may be out for some time with the tattoo scheduled to be completed in 3 months.
The one i got was not very large so i got it all in one sitting.Outline color and all.So im sure that if you had to get the out line first then the color you would have to wait for both to heal. You could try the seran wrap suggestion, but like i said and i also saw in another post this doesn't always work. And with the amount of money your prob gonna spend on a full sleeve i wouldn't take any chances.Plus if it were to be ruined you would be out even longer to get it fixed. It's all up to you though.
Ive gotten away with it before but i have mostly black tattoos,i honestly dont think i would risk it with a large expensive work. Easier said than done tho,i hate taking time off from the mats
"Seven times fall, eight times get up"
Especially if you're getting a large area done TAKE AT LEAST TWO FULL WEEKS OFF!!!! Maybe three if you can wait that long. I know lots of people that have gotten tats and had a surprise hike and their tats ended up getting screwed up. The thing is its a wound. If it tears or is irritated it will react with swelling, color loss (whether black or other), and can cause the definition to suffer. I really believe that if you want your tat to heal properly, don't roll for two to three weeks. You're not even really supposed to get into a hot tub for two to three weeks, let alone get hot and sweaty and rub it all over the place. I have 5 tattoos myself in different areas and I always made sure I had ample time to let them heal before I did anything where abrasion was possible.
You might be totally fine, but more likely than not you will cause damage to the tattoo if you roll sooner than two weeks in my opinion. I also am picky about my tats, they are forever and they are expensive. If you're not as picky then you may not care so much if they get a little messed up. It's up to you.
I would say it all depends on how your healing and how hard your rolling. It should only scab like a minor abrasion so at least a week and you should be fine.Hell you could go a couple days after if you took it easy. The one thing to remember is that you dont want the scab to get rubbed off,you can loose color if that happens. So just look at how its healing and if you think it wont get rubbed off then go for it.
Also..if your getting a full sleeve you could be down for a while.A sleeve is usually done in a few appointments depending on the work.
