First off, I don't believe that BJJ is the only martial art that matters in the world.

Second, do you guys really believe that someone is going to stand there and say "I can't believe that it only takes someone 3 years to get their black belt in TKD. In BJJ, it takes them 10 years most of the time." Most people dont really know how much work is involed and from their standpoint, people doing BJJ are the idiots because they have to pay money to goto a club for ten years to get a black belt.

Before everyone starts screaming at me, that is not what I believe. It is simply another way to think about it. I know the amount of work involved with and I am just as much in love with BJJ as everyone else. I also believe that BJJ is superior in many ways to lots of martial arts. However, I am not going to sit there and make fun of everyone who does the another martial art. We can talk about the falling standards in the martial arts and there is no problem with that, but that doesn't mean everyone who does them is an idiot. Some people like doing TKD for the sport of it, just like I like doing BJJ for the sport. Lots of things look stupid if you are on the outside looking in, but that doesn't meant those people aren't having fun or getting what the want out of it.

I don't think anyone is ripping into TKD (or any other art) it is being used as an example because it has been hit by the McDojo virus more then most but no one is discrediting authentic well trained TKD schools.

And I think everyone would agree that a black belt represents an extremely high level of understanding of ones art. And I find it hard to believe anyone could do it in 3 years from scratch and actually have that level of understanding. There's the occasional prodigy that picks it up fast but when some place starts churning out a factory line of black belts every year its fishy.

I know a TKD instructor how is excellent.. most of his BB;s are typically 5-6 year students.. that is more realistic for an art like TKD..

but sadly BJJ is slowly being hit by this as TKD schools and such are suddenly offing BJJ to capture the MMA craze and even some formerly legit BJJ schools are promoting BB's in 3-4 years.. while in some cases there is a prodigy who has the skill to back it.. there are some creeping up who lack the skill..
If you are in the Scranton Area of PA and are having trouble finding instruction or training partners or simply can not afford the training that is provided in Scranton.. Contact me. I am starting a BJJ club under the direction of a Jorge Gurgel Black Belt.

To lower the standards for someone would be a form of discrimination even if it's in favor of them getting their belt.
You guys keep compairing her to blind people. This is a handicap but they do still have all their limbs and the ability to do the technique proper. How can she be held to the same standard as someone who has all their limbs?3 years is fast to get a blackbelt in any MA.Taekwondo in recent years has become a belt factory out for money. But she has put her heart and soul into it and impressive or not if that is the timeframe to recieve a blackbelt in the MA she is taking she deserves it.

lyod Irvin is known to promote belt lvls mighty fast.He himself got his blackbelt in a record 4 years.BUT he has the gold medals to prove he has the skill. Also his students have the same skill to prove that their fast belt promotions aren't just to build the schools rep. They back up everything they preach. With that said they are really the onlys school i know of like that.Any other school promoting BJJ blackbelts in 4 to 5 years would be a mcdojo in my eyes.

Also thank god when i was on TKD back in the late 80's early 90's it wasn't really hit with the mcdojo virus yet.It took me about 7 years to recive my blackbelt, and you had to know wtf you were doin.i remember failing more than a few belt test back then.Nowadays i think it is impossible to fail a TKD belt test.Infact just a few years back my little cousin was in TKD he was testing for green belt.He goofed his kata, and didn't break one of his boards and got his ass handed to him in sparring(sorry cousinyet still passed. If that had been me 10 years earlier no way in hell would i have revieved my belt.

Great Point with Lyod Irvin. My intructor Traven trained 3 times a day for 4 years and guess what happened...he got his Black Belt. For him 1 year equaled 3 years not just beacuse of the training but b/c he ate, trained, lived and slept BJJ. I think that what everyone should also realize is that unless you train like Traven which, I have a hard time believeing anyone that says they do, when you have someone that recieved a black belt in 3-4 years you are now going to compete against people that on average have 8-10 years under their belt. I wrote a paper in grad school about expertise and what I found is that the overall combination of talent and time spent training creates the expert which the Black Belt represents. Saulo Ribiero said in the Docu-film "Arte Suave" that talent only gets you so far and that sooner or later hard -work is the only thing that takes you to the next level. Now this lady that hass recieved her Black Belt should be held to the same standard during the test. For example, if the fact that she has no knee caps means she can not keep her balance while kicking, then I'm sorry she should be able to pass. But that is the opinion of a non-TKD martial artist. If at her academy they reward perseverance and hard-work over technical application in consideration of a black belt then that is their right.
