    Is belt grading compulsory?

Was just wondering cause I met a guy who is still a white belt but have skills of purple belt. Apparently he has being offered purple belts by couple of instructors but he never accepts them.

So if he enteres a comp he can still compete as white belt? If so this would be so unfair. What do you guys think?

What a sad loser! I don't know what kind of kick you'd get out of competing against white belts at that level... I hope he chokes on his white belt.

well if he is an active competitor it should become obvious to all running the various tournaments that he is sandbagging.. My instructor is a purple who I outweigh by almost 100 pounds.. and being just a white belt he can make me look really stupid. I mean there is a huge and visible difference between us in the way we roll.
    ...
Personally I would bring it up with your instructor and possibly various tournament officials ... I'd start with instructor first.

Some people like sandbagging. The competitions I have seen make it so if you have more then 1 year or grappeling (bjj, wrestling, etc) experience then you are not allowed to be in the white belt part of the competition. It is an attempt to stop people like this. If you do bring it up with people, just make sure you do it the right way. Whistleblowing on people is a sure way to piss someone off, especially if done the wrong way.

All part of the culture unfortunately, But there is often real reasons for people to be above their belt level. Some clubs only grade once a year or they have to wait for a certain instructor to be available to do a grading and if you miss the day you have to wait till next time round. But that only goes so far and can excuse a white belt at blue level or a blue at purple. It shouldn't span more then that. Where I train we don't do BJJ gradings we do a traditional JJ grade in club and go to an affiliated club to be graded for BJJ. Because of that no one goes to be graded till its obvious that they have what it takes.

sometimes people use the technique of "Sand bagging" so that they can enter tournaments and win.

But you have to also take into effect that some well known instructors are hard to get belts from whereas some no name bjj instructors that barely opened a school are willing to give out belts to people so that they train at their school. So even though he might be good, it might just be the instructor hasn't given him a belt yet because he has a tough instructor.

Another thing it also could be is that he may be a good wrestler and/or be in extreme good shape to make him look good. Where in reality he has limited jiu jitsu skills but much aggressiveness that makes him look good.

To get belts its about how much of jiu jitsu you know and the techniques you can use. You do not get belts simply because you can beat a couple people of the higher belt up.

Haha that's funny, are you sure he's ready. He might just be good at competing, but not learning the techniques.
