My teacher recommended I get a copy of the books "Dynamic Judo: Throws" and "Dynamic Judo: Grappling" and I discovered their out of print and sell about $300-$500 dollars each. There is a re-release version (Judo in Action series) that sells way cheaper but its missing a chunk of content apparently
Anyone spent heaps on must have books or any other piece of gear?
Who in their right mind would buy a book for $300-500? The most expensive thing in my arsenal is my GI, which was less then $100.
IMO, you would be better to spend that money on other things then a book if the book costs that much.
I agree. I got Jiu-Jitsu university and it was the best bjj book I've ever seen. With that said, I would have never spent anywhere close to $300-500. You're better off getting private lessons or taking like 6 months of a judo classes for that price. I just dont think you can learn $300-$500 worth of technique from a book.
The most expensive thing I own is my brand new Lucky Gi that I got at a discount because my instructor is an OTM rep.
Yeah im going to buy the cheaper reprints, I can get them both for about $20 each. I guess youd buy the originals if you were a serious collector or something.
I think the War belts are pretty expensive. Yes, I know they're made of gi material. No I don't think that's a worthy reason for the expensive price.
I thought the Helio Gracie book was money. That Judo book sounds insane. BUt people have paid more for first edition books all over the world.
The most expensive things I spend money on for training are gi's. I have five currently and want more. Looking into a Shoyoroll and an Atama #9.
those do sound insanely expensive....most i spent was 400 on a gi...300 for the gi....100 on tailoring....other then that....i have a WAR belt....i know some think they are a dumb purchase....but ...i truly believe it is the best belt i have ever worn...i would not spend 500 on books
I would tell him to buy a set to lend to students if theyre gonna cost that much, especially if its important to the way he teaches that you learn from them.

It's not a prerequisite or anything. I doubt he'd be lending a book with a price tag like that to students(I know I wouldn't). I ended up buying the cheaper reprints and I must admit they're damn good. I would rate the content above nearly all the other books I've got.
Not bad considering it was printed in the 60's, Apart from black and white photos there isnt a real leap in printing technology since it was made, I was half expecting the book to have cave drawings.
Well does he require you to study it or is it just a suggestion? If its required that would probably be the one time I told an instructor no haha.
