I started TKD when I was eleven and really excelled at that for a few years, I also fell in love with ALL martial arts at this point. Found the UFC in the 90s and knew that I had to learn grappling and BJJ. trained with a friend for a while off and on. left the martial arts and focused on sports for a while and then joined the United States Marine Corps. Studied boxing for a bit, some Aikido for a couple years. Continued to study an MMA that exposed me to a little bit of everything. Then finally found I could study GJJ through their online university and fell in love with that. My reasons for studying the martial arts are mostly for self defense. I found myself getting into a lot of fights and needed to find a way to avoid conflict and the martial arts gave me those tools and the confidence to dictate my own destiny.
I have not even started my journey in BJJ but the main goal is the excecise aspect of it as well as learning the art. I have never competed at anything in my life and am seriously wanting to with BJJ, Win or lose I am sure that I will learn something about myself. I am sure that I would be nervous and throw up...lol
I wanted to improve my hand to hand and grappling skills while attending university and before i join the army.
i tried kickboxing, didn't like getting kicked or punched .... thought i would mess up my face......
started bjj and now i got bruises all over my arms, matburn on my forehead and very mild cauli on one of my ears............ maybe kickboxing would've have been a better choice lol
EDIT: my goal was to get back into shape (was real cut back in college)... lifting weights and the old gym routine was boring.... signed up at the local bjj gym where my buddy trained.
I was always interested in MA.Took taekwondo starting at 6 till i got my blackbelt at 13.What happened when i turned 13 you ask?Well the first UFC was aired.I still remember to this day me and my father watching it together.I remember seeing all these Kung Fu,Kenpo,Boxing,Karate masters get dismantled by this little brazillian guy. With each new match i was sure he was gonna lose. But he never did. After that i quit taekwondo and knew i had to try this BJJ.Well unfortunatly at that time schools for it were sparse in america. So i spent about 10 years waiting for one to open up near me.In that time i took some boxing nothing major. Then when i was 22 i finally signed on to a No Gi bjj school studied for prob about 6 months then got married and my wife got pregnant.I had to quit for about 6 years.Well i finally have time in my life to take back up what ive dreamed of mastering since i was a 13 year old boy watching in awe of this skinny brazillian dude own guys who outweighed him by 90 or so pounds.
I had been into traditional karate type martial arts since a kid.I was the kid who watched all the martial arts flicks and subscribed to black belt magazine etc, lol.Long story short...I watched UFC 1 and have been obsessed with BJJ ever since. I was from a small town so I never had access to any BJJ schools,so I just watched videos and was a huge fan.Well I recently moved to a big place with access to all kinds of good BJJ schools. So signed up at ATT..only been to a few classes so far but I am in heaven.Thats my story.lol
Oh and as far as goals I would have to say pretty much same as the OP. To consider myself a martial artist and learn the master of all martial arts. I really don't wanna fight mma or wanna be able to say I am the baddest dude on the block. I am old school and into the more traditional side of it I guess.

Training in Martial Arts and in Gi Jiu Jitsu helps your physical fitness extremely well. One of the best works outs I have found is wrestling and BJJ!

i started in full contact at the age of 5, only about a year, then switched to shotokan karate. kept there around 6/7 years, getting my 1st degree brown belt. won a few tournaments in the Kata and Kumite, and my belts where all passed with distinction...meanwhile got fed up with it, cause shotokan karate is kinda boring, so went on to others sports.until last year, that i started training BJJ..my life has changed dramatically, for the better since then, and i'm loving the experience...still a white belt, with for stripes, almost getting my blue...
