Wow, describing anything in BJJ as getting you "horned" makes me very uncomfortable.
We don't do formal testing at my school, but I know exactly what you're talking about. A few weeks ago my best friend who I've been training with for about 2 years got his. Very "Dawwwww" moment.
"Yes, these are bruises from fighting. Yes, I'm comfortable with that. I am enlightened."
We are testing at my school tonight...![]()

see my school does not do testing.. all we know is that when you are ready either Royler Gracie or David Adiv will be there. We got one guy close to Blue.
For stripes.. your rolling the instructor calls you over and bam.. you got a stripe..

I thank that both stiles of promoting are cool their are pros and cons to both I'm sure.
I'm completely against belt testing tbh. I think it's not in the nature of BJJ so mechanicaly to be able to some moves etc. It doesn't translate to sparring one least bit.
Besides, I find it pathetic that some guys won't get belts because "they aren't technical enough". A guy that I know finished 3rd in the Mundials 2007, won the European opens 2007, 2008 and 2009 with MANY more tournament victories. So what do they tell him in the belt exam? "You're not technical enough!", twiceAre you fking kidding me?!?! He finally got his purple belt a few months ago. I mean, I find it rather self-explanatory that after finishing 3rd in the Mundials, you should get your next belt...
But yes, it is a very nice moment to be around when someone get's their belt! My first experience was when two friends got their purple belts. It was a really awesome feeling, the next time was my time for blue... I haven't actually been to more than maybe 7-8 gradings tbh...
I think it really depends on the student.. Some students can explain break down and teach moves all day long may be able to do the move text book perfect in practice every time. But when they roll they can not manage to pull even the simplest maneuver. And I have seen others who look awesome when rolling submit people like nothing.. but ask them to demonstrate a move they can't// but they can do it in a live situation.. so go figure.. I think an instructor needs to take this and other factors into consideration when aarding stripes and belts.

In my oppinion stripes don't mean sh*t.
And my oppinion too. I think belts should be awarded by the time you spent on the matt from day to day. Teacher should know if his/her student is good enough for the next belt.
On the other hand I don't see anything wron in demonstrating or promotion rolling during the promotion but I think that the promotion should not be based on the test.
I dont agree with belts being awarded on time tho...I think skill is the most important thing, ofcoarse when look at skill, other things have to be considered (age, size, whether or not the person is a competitor, etc) but in the end if you have the knowledge and skill, and can apply you will get your promotion one way or other, have to agree with Benu here. Im not a big fan of mechanical movements from progression charts. We all kno in rolling, and especially in competition things rarely ever go as planned, you have to be able to identify whats happening, and go by feel...that is what I think should be tested.
