1.Did y'all train at your first school no-gi before you had to get a gi?
I'm knew to bjj but have been training at the same school for 6mouths or so. We have gi and no-gi classes Ive been training with both classes for 3 mouths now and have not got a gi yet.
I have one on order but my size up top makes it a hard to find thing, so my instructor has been letting me slide.
2.So how long did you train if any before you got your first gi?
Ummm why do you assume most people trained no gi first?

or that people didn't start with both?

Lots of schools give trial classes.. Many schools have loner Gi's.. we do.. It was once worn by Vitor Belfort.. and I have one I won from this site for the larger guys.. Sometimes we have someone who does not fit but we can usally get them a Gi inside a week or two..
If you are in the Scranton Area of PA and are having trouble finding instruction or training partners or simply can not afford the training that is provided in Scranton.. Contact me. I am starting a BJJ club under the direction of a Jorge Gurgel Black Belt.

Well I started doing both and both are offered at my school and I firmly believe everyone should be doing both

I guess I started no-gi first, training for MMA and such, but quickly signed up for BJJ w/ the GI. All depends on your goals, I think training in regular class with the GI helps me learn the most, since most of the non-GI my gym offers is all MMA related. It's nice to learn the moves well, then transfer them over to no-GI. I just keep my goals in mind when I train, I do this for MMA, so I make sure I'm not relying on the grips of a GI too much while in a GI class..
I started both, to begin with it was the on-loan Gi when ever we did a lesson on chokes or something that really needed it, then about a month into training I bought a cheap Judo Gi then about a year in I moved up to my enViro Gi.
I think training Gi is an advantage for anyone, it lets you learn more on breaking grips and the fact that your not going to be wearing just a pair of shorts when you walk down that dodgy street at the wrong time.

I started training mostly with GI, however I didnt have a gi for my first month or so...I started doing no gi as well as gi after about 5 months.
You guys make me feel like such a nerd for starting with Judo. I had been doing BJJ for a year before hearing the name Royce Gracie or even seeing a MMA fight.
