Hey everyone, Im completey new to bjj and have a question that im sure will be easy for any that has trained for a while to answer.
Ok, so I had my first lesson yesterday. We started with some stretching and ran a bit, then went onto a few basic drills. Now, for the life of me I cant remember the name of this, you see it all the time though. My instructor had my lay on my back and he stood up as I bassically tried to turn in a 360 kinda way, or he would reverse, you know the basic idea was that I had to follow him and use my legs to "keep him at bay" sorta speak. I hope that was a good enough description, I just need the name to know what thats called, I wanna check out some videos or just get advice from you guys about it.
Bassically I want to know how often I should be "allowed" to actually put a foot on the ground in order to turn, to follow him, or is most of the movement suspose to come from the hips to turn?
Also, he suggested getting on my back with a chair infront of me and just pratice trying to turn from side to side. What do you guys this?
BTW, after that we rolled and he bassically just put me in bad positions and said "just try to get out, figure it out"... I got rnc'd and caught in a arm triangle
So any advice would be greatly appreaciated. Thank!
Hey, thanks alot for reply! That helps alot. Now, whats the name of that drill?
Id like to watch some gracie opens or something and get a better grasp on it.
One more thing, I was just talking to my instructor and he said to use my elbows also to help turn, and to kind of keep your forearms up to your face like your putting up guard. Does that sound about right? sorry for my ignorance guys/gals, but as my name says Im new to this and dont wanna half ass it.
So again, any help is really appreaciated, or any other drills you think would help out, expessically any solo drills.
Thanks!

I do not know the name of the drill, then again, I don't know the name of most of our drills.
When he said to use your elbows to turn, he's expecting that you have your hands up near your neck to protect it from gi chokes and such. I personally use my shoulder blades to rotate, which causes your elbows to work up and down. Another reason to keep those hands and arm in near your neck is to keep them away from possible arm bars.
We do a drill (solo) where you lie on your back, head off of the mat and complete a circle to the left and then the right without using your feet or hands. Great core drill.
There are a couple of posts under the technique section that demonstrate quite a few solo drills. Keep in mind, the best drills are done with a partner (IMO, I am a one stripe white belt so keep that in mind).
Here's one:

I believe that when you first start bjj you need to first practice moving your hips doing drills like shrimping is very much key for the rest of your time as a bjj fighter. Then I would start breaking guard doing guard passes drills are key and you will use them always you can never not get better at them. There is always room to improve in bjj I have almost 5 years of experience and I watch video after video on myself and still see lots I need to improve on.
i have done it a few times but it it was after a failed triangle attempt or fake with the triangle then roll to the arm bar. at my gym we were showed a set up it was triangal to omoplata to arm bar and the fakes or them blocking will set it up
i like to practice mounted armbars im getting better but i gotta stay tighter
basics are the best look at trumpetdan for good basic tips http://www.youtube.com/user/TrumpetDanBJJ he also breaks down roger gracies techniques really good
